What are Cortical Malformations?
Cortical malformations are rare developmental abnormalities affecting the surface layer, or cerebral cortex, of the brain. While a normal cortex has several characteristic folds, the brains of people with cortical malformations may look very different. They may have areas of unusually large cells (focal cortical dysplasia), appear smooth (lissencephaly), appear clefted (schizencephaly), be covered with many small folds (polymicrogyria), have thickened folds (pachygyria), have one hemisphere larger than another (hemimegalencephaly), have grey matter located in the wrong part of the brain (heterotopia), or have non-malignant cortical tumors (tuberous sclerosis).
